About / À Propos
Robbie Munro is a painter born and raised in Montreal, Quebec with a background in film from Concordia
University. He uses traditional oil painting methods to develop works exploring the jocular juxtaposition
between themes of the unconscious and the uncanny, driven by internet culture and contemporary media
as a collective (un)consciousness.
Using a collage of found images, personal experience, and internet sources, Robert often uses human subjects to portray uncanny spaces or situations that seamlessly intertwine everyday life, dreams and the online world. In his technique he implements hues found in the lighting of modern cinema and photography, often using two principal characters. He dissects the correlation between the spaces and emotions that define the nature of human exchange represented in his paintings. The characters portrayed in the scenes appear encapsulated by a present task at hand. Whether they are aware of it or not, the physical space in which they exist becomes that which taints the perception of the relationship.
‘I like to think that I’m telling a story in my work, and by positioning myself as an observer, I aim to produce
certain feelings in those who view it. By doing this, I hope to connect with them on an emotional level.’ What
they interpret from the story within the image matters less than their ability to sense and understand the
emotions present at hand.
By meshing the conscious and unconscious from personal experience with found virtual imagery, Munro aims to deconstruct mental images and investigate a collective unconsciousness that exists between many others of his generation.

"Une grande partie de mon travail jusqu'à présent a consisté à traduire un moyen de narration visuelle. J'explore des thèmes d'espaces surréalistes et/ou de situations qui semblent pouvoir être trouvés dans la vie quotidienne et les rêves. En fusionnant le conscient et le subconscient présents dans la mémoire personnelle et/ou les images culturelles, j'essaie de déconstruire les images mentales en peintures."
